Leaving southern Oaxaca to plant new roots in Ensenada is a steep climb, especially for immigrants with little Spanish and even less schooling. Francisco’s family migrated together, all 14 of them, and found comfort in their tight bond. His deepest wish was to give his wife, five children, and eight grandchildren a better life, especially his disabled twin daughters. Francisco’s pride made it hard to look to others for help, but his faith in God sustained him. That faith was rewarded the moment he held the keys to a new double house; the heavy weight he carried melted into joy. This new home meant everything he prayed for: a place big enough to embrace his entire family, keeping them safe, warm, and united.
